New York City kids are heading back to school, and ACP asked for advice from Dr. Henry Chen, a leading community-based Primary Care Physician who has managed the health care of patients in the Asian communities of Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 20 years. Dr. Chen also is a co-founder and President of Advocate Community Providers.
As a parent of school-aged children, I know that August is a hectic month: shopping for supplies, finishing summer reading, and coordinating drop-off and pick-up schedules are just a few items on our to-do list. As a Primary Care Physician, I also know that ensuring your child is healthy and ready to learn is just as important as notebooks and a backpack.
On the heels of the U.S. Senate’s reveal of a bill that would dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), former president Barack Obama wrote, “The Senate Bill, unveiled today, is not a health care bill. It’s a massive transfer of wealth from middle-class and poor families to the richest people in America.” Those ‘middle-class and poor families’ are my patients.
June is national Men’s Health Month, which serves as an important reminder for men to take care of themselves physically and mentally.
Too many patients – not to mention parents of asthmatic children – become complacent and neglect to fill their prescription or take their control medicine. This is a big mistake because the most important goal is to prevent the next asthma attack. All too often, patients end up in an emergency room to treat an attack that could have been avoided to begin with. As Asthma Awareness Month comes to a close, let’s debunk some of the common myths shared by many patients.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month; there is no better time to take it upon ourselves to end the stigmatization of mental illness once and for all.
