The American Dream: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

Dear ACP Network providers, friends, and colleagues:

As our nation’s leaders debate the direction of health care policy – with potentially catastrophic implications for tens of millions of Americans – we are reminded of words that have encouraged countless immigrants to seek a better life in this great country – “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Many of you, and nearly all of the patients under our care, came to this country in pursuit of this ideal. For many struggling immigrants, chronic disease, lack of access to care, and the burden of medical expenses can be insurmountable barriers in the pursuit of the American dream.

Medicaid – which covers 20 percent of Americans, 40 percent of poor Americans, and 76 percent of poor children – would be substantially restructured by the proposed health care legislation. Six million Medicaid recipients are New York state residents, including more than 600,000 entrusted to the care of ACP network physicians.

All of us at Advocate Community Providers salute you – our independent, community-based physicians and partners – for your perseverance, sacrifice, and dedication to improving the health and well-being of New York City’s most vulnerable citizens. Thank you for being a part of our mission every day.

Happy Independence Day!
